  • Life at a small, indie house: Ch-ch-ch-ch-changesMarch 10, 2011

Hello again, lovely readers. As we’ve been getting to know each other over these past few months, I, of course, now feel motivated to tell you intimate details of my life. Such as, over the weekend, my boyfriend and I had our very first fight. In a Best Buy. Over a Drew Barrymore movie.

  • Tom's long-awaited (read: overdue) interviewMarch 7, 2011

I've been harrassing my (poor) UK counterpart to interview a bookseller across the pond. After much nagging (sorry, Tom!), he was able to get to speak with Peter Ho, the owner and manager of Clerkenwell Tales. Clerkenwell Tales is a small, boutique bookshop on Exmouth Market, in Clerkenwell near the Nicholas Brealey Publishing London office. Tom describes it as a pretty cool looking store that specializes in quality fiction, art books and the best in modern thinking.

  • Put your kids to the library testMarch 2, 2011

Children’s classics still are just as relevant today as they always have been. I see the books that are displayed in my local bookstore, or that rank the highest on Amazon, and they may be the latest and greatest Fancy Nancy or Vampire series. But, I challenge you to leave the bookstore with your child, and instead visit your local library.

  • Speaking of India: A Guide to Indian Literature in EnglishFebruary 28, 2011

In Craig Storti's Speaking of India, he writes that "the defining quality of most conversations between Indians is the overarching necessity to say what other people want to hear."

How, then, do Indians communicate bad news? As Storti writes, they leave out certain things and don't quite say others. Other Indians, of course, understand what is being said, and also appreciate the courtesy shown.

All of this subtlety has created a culture that is ripe for the production of literature, which one could define as the art of saying more than you appear to be saying.

  • Consider a little self-analysis before self-publishingFebruary 23, 2011

What’s your expectation? Do you want to just see your book on Amazon and place a copy on your bookshelf? Or are you thinking this is your way to hitting it big? Which is it? Because that’s an important distinction.

  • Oh Borders, we hardly knew you.February 16, 2011

The Borders Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this morning and although this is not entirely unexpected, it’s still very upsetting to see another bookstore bite the dust. The second-largest book retailer currently has 659 stores and nearly 20,000 employees are planning to close 200 stores and cut its staff significantly. Cue soft violin music here.

  • Digital Book World - A RecapJanuary 31, 2011

The title said digital, but there was plenty of talk about plain old print books, and bricks and mortar bookstores, because they are still a big part of most publishers’ business, even if they are shrinking. And in spite of the talk about shrinking revenues, it was an optimistic group, with many of us dazzled by the possibilities of digital.

  • On the Road with Clint GreenleafJanuary 26, 2011

I spoke to Clint Greenleaf (yes, that Clint Greenleaf of Greenleaf Book Group) while he was driving from Omaha to Kansas City. When I admitted that I was a northeasterner with less-than-stellar geographical skills, he informed me, good-naturedly, that the ride is about three hours long. Now, I would have to imagine that any long-distance car ride with two little tykes in the backseat watching Little Einsteins might be a little bit exhausting. Heck, just watching Little Einsteins for three hours would be exhausting. But, for Clint Greenleaf, this might be the closest he’ll come to a vacation all year.
